A quirky cottage in Crete from £325

A quirky cottage in Crete from £325

Character holiday homes in the Med can still be found if you know where to look. Crete specialist Freelance Holidays is highlighting quirky cottages ‘twixt mountains and the sea that are perfect for couples or young families.

Emilio’s House occupies the corner of Agia Paraskevi’s village square, where a passing donkey constitutes rush hour. The living room is built into the rock face and there are sea views from the bedroom. It sleeps up to four, with use of the nearby taverna’s swimming pool. A week’s stay starting 1 or 8 July costs £335.

Just outside the village of Gavalahori is Panayiotis House where a grapevine shades the terrace and a traditional Cretan oven makes a great barbecue. With stone arches, panelled ceilings and an open fireplace, this simple cottage is a perfect retreat for two, costing £325 for a week starting 1 or 8 July.

The last 100 metres to the front door of Rebecca’s House must be made on foot: the reward is panoramic views to the sea from the dining terrace. The friendly locals in the village of Platanyas include Rebecca herself, who welcomes guests with local specialities such as bureki (baked pasta dish). Sleeping up to three, the weeks of 15, 22 and 29 July cost £435.

Flights are not included in the above prices, but Crete is served by Easyjet and Jet2.com as well as charter airlines. Freelance Holidays can arrange car hire in advance. Reservations: 0845 094 8871, http://www.freelance-holidays.co.uk/

EUROPE’S MOST POPULAR VILLAS

EUROPE’S MOST POPULAR VILLAS – from Freelance Holidays, specialist in luxury villas on the islands of Crete, Mallorca and Sardinia.

Villa Nynemia, Crete (http://www.crete-freelance-holidays.co.uk/crete/almirida/nynemia/nynemia.php?content=fulldesc

Nynemia means ‘peace’ in ancient Greek and the villa lives up to its name as it’s set in 6000 sq metres of land, surrounded by olive groves but with glorious sea views. It is within fairly easy walking distance of the beaches, shops and tavernas of Almirida.
The villa sleeps six (three bedrooms, all ensuite), is air-conditioned throughout, has an 9m x 5m swimming pool with gazebo, outside shower and sun-beds.

“Our most popular booked up property is Villa Nynemia in Crete. We get people calling whilst they are there on holiday to book for the next year and we have about four families who go every year (and one family who keep asking to buy it),” says managing director, Paul Fogg.

“Apart from amazing sea views, its tranquil rural setting and the really high standard of the property, the other main attractions are the friendly owners Penny & Percicles. They are very discreet but bend over backwards to make sure everything is just perfect for each and every arrival from making sure the towels are nice and fluffy to supplying gifts of fruit and flowers from her mother’s garden.

“Every time I see Penny she proudly shows me her collection of presents from her guests!”

Alternative villa:
Villa Meli in Sfinari, Crete - http://www.crete-freelance-holidays.co.uk/crete/sfinari/meli/meli.php

This brand-new villa offers, like Nynemia, easy accessibility to beaches and tavernas – this time in the charming fishing village of Sfinari.

The villa has just been completed and checked by the owners so is now available for booking right through until October with Freelance Holidays.

Villa Meli has three, ensuite bedrooms including a master suite which takes up the entire first floor with floor-to-ceiling windows with sea views, double Jacuzzi bath, all with sliding doors to a private balcony running the entire length of the building. There’s also an infinity pool set in pretty gardens, all with sunning views out to sea.

A week’s rental in July starts at £1425. A week late September/October is £795.

Villa specialist adds Sicily to islands line up

9 January 2009

Villa specialist adds Sicily to islands line up

Freelance Holidays has added Sicily to its portfolio of Mediterranean islands, joining properties on Sardinia, Crete and Mallorca for 2009.

The specialist, which seeks out individual villas with pools, character village houses and small apartment developments, has chosen a dozen properties on Sicily’s beautiful north coast.

For example, the organically-run estate of Tenuta Mariano grows olives and grapes and is criss-crossed with paths that guests can explore on foot or by bike. At the heart of the estate is the Villa and former stables, both now holiday homes with white-washed walls, red-tiled floors and beamed ceilings.

The Casa sleeps four in galleried double room and a ground-floor twin. French windows open on to a covered terrace with views across the vineyards.

The separate Villa is a four-bed, two bathroom house sleeping eight. Huge bay windows lighten the living area which features an open-sided fireplace. Two first floor bedrooms have balconies and all enjoy views across the rolling countryside.

Estate buildings include a demonstration kitchen where – for 70 euros per person – Chef Baldo will hold a teach-in, leaving guests the results for dinner. Sicilian specialities include sardines marinated in mint and pasta with pistachios and Pacchino tomatoes. The Chef can also deliver ready-prepared meals on nights when guests don’t want to cook.

The colourful towns of Camporeale and San Cipirello are nearby, the area is heaving with Greek and Roman remains, such as the theatre at Segesta and for ‘Godfather’ fans, the town of Corleone is just half an hour away, as is Palermo. The superb beach at Selinunte is an hour by car.

A week’s rental of Casa Tenuta Mariano, sleeping four, costs £800 in May, rising to £1100 in August peak. Other properties in Sicily start at £400 for an apartment sleeping two. Flights are not included, but nearby Palermo and Trapani airports on Sicily are served by http://www.easyjet.com/  and http://www.ryanair.com/

Crete for Easter - save up to £190 with Freelance’s super villa deals

The ‘Crete Escape’…just what the Freelance Holidays’ doctor orders for those suffering from a lack of sunshine and surfeit of gloomy news.

To sweeten the pill, the company is highlighting a range of properties – villas, character houses and harbour-side apartments - on the island where prices have been reduced throughout April, including Easter.

For example, guaranteed to lift the spirits is the view from Villa Eleni (sleeps four), set in secluded gardens on the edge of the traditional, stone-built village of Douliana and with a spectacular vista from the pool and roof terrace of the White Mountains and the sea. The nearest beach is a ten-minute drive and the nearest taverna a five-minute stagger home! A week’s rental starting 7, 14 or 21 April is now £495 (saving £190).

Just 500m from the beach is Pericles House, a family-size villa close to the traditional seaside village of Sfinari with its excellent fish tavernas and delightful coastal walks. This property sleeps six and now costs £575 for a week’s rental in April (saving £190).

Flights are not included. Cheap deals can usually be found with Easyjet, Jet2 or on one of the many charter flights. Freelance Holidays can book car hire.

Easter in Crete – late deals

With temperatures in April averaging 17 degrees, Crete is the perfect island for a week of Easter sun – and flexible travellers have two Easters to choose from – the ‘British’ Easter of 12 April and the Greek Orthodox Easter of 19 April!

Island specialist Freelance Holidays still has availability within its portfolio of hand-picked properties, including character cottages like Emilio’s House, built hobbit-like into the corner of the village square of Agia Paraskevi. Sleeping up to four, it is now just £245 for the week of 7 or 14 April – a saving of £55 on the original price.

The Villa Almyra is a total contrast, this architect-designed house enjoying a privileged position with sea views in Almirida. There are bargains to be had on Crete even at Half Term says villa specialist Freelance Holidays.

From their portfolio of more than 70 properties on the island, they are highlighting Pericles Beach Villa for families arriving 26 May. Just 500m from the beach the villa has its own pool plus a small pool for children, large sun terraces with great sea views – and a barbecue. The three-bed, three-bathroom villa sleeps six and now costs £850, saving £210 on the original price of £1060.

The Old Olive Mill is another great deal. This hilltop property close to the traditional village of Embrosneros combines original stone walls and beamed ceilings with new plumbing and kitchen – plus of course a stylish private pool. The week of 26 May was £995 but now costs £840, saving £155. As the three-bed, three-shower villa sleeps six, this makes Half Term a bargain at £140 per person.

Category – Islands OR Villas OR Families!

A family-friendly villa on Mallorca

Mallorca is everyone’s first family holiday – and no wonder: it’s easy to get to with direct charter flights from a range of airports, with short flight time, reliable weather and glorious beaches.

Sa Torre is a traditional hacienda-style villa with three bedrooms and three bathrooms – so no queues for the bathroom whether you’re an extended family or friends holidaying together – and a glorious seven-metre swimming pool in the garden, accessed by Roman steps.

It’s tucked into a valley beneath the Tramuntana Mountains, between Pollenca and the small town of Campanet, with far reaching views and an orchard of figs next door. The beach at Puerto Pollenca is 20 minutes drive away.

The covered terrace provides shade by day and a BBQ venue by night, with another al fresco dining area at the other side of the house. The interiors are cool and traditional, with beamed ceilings, but the farmhouse-style kitchen is well-equipped and the plumbing in the three bathrooms bang up to date.

The Deal
A week’s rental in peak season, starting 18 or 25 July, 1, 8 or 15 August (changeover day is Saturday) was £1425 for the whole villa, but is now £1295, a saving of £130 in total.
Star rating – there are no official ratings, but Sa Torre is ‘very comfortable’ according to Freelance Holidays.
Board basis is self-catering.
Flights are not included: try Monarch, Thomsonfly, easyJet and others – eg charter flights from Luton available for summer Saturdays from £150-£200 per person return.
Freelance Holidays can pre-book car hire on request.

Villas with views – and bags of style

Villas with views – and bags of style

High season deals on high end villas are still available says villa specialist Freelance Holidays.

The company offers private holiday homes on a choice of Mediterranean islands and is highlighting school holiday deals across its range.

For example, on Mallorca, Hort D’en Gelos overlooks rolling farmland at the foot of the Tramuntana Mountains, 10 minutes’ drive from thriving Campanet and 15 minutes from the beaches of Pollensa. The rustic farmhouse is beautifully restored to four-star standard and sleeps six, with three shower/bathrooms, its own pool and barbecue. Seven nights arriving 1, 8 or 15 August were £1850 but are now reduced to £1665, or just £278 per person based on maximum occupancy.

On Crete, Villa Eleni’s infinity pool offers far-reaching views down the valley to Souda Bay XX-miles away. This two-bed, two-bath villa is elegantly styled and only ten minutes’ walk from the tavernas of Douliana village. A week’s hire in August starts at £1295, down from £1495 – a saving of £200.

Flights are not included. A host of charters and low-cost airlines fly to all Freelance Holidays’ destination and the company can book car hire for guests.

‘end of summer’ self-catering in Europe

Villa specialist Freelance Holidays reports ‘pockets’ of availability at the end of August – and is highlighting the last week of August for family bargains, when prices drop by up to £400 this week – before it’s ‘back to school’ for everyone.

For example, on Crete a week’s holiday starting 25 August costs only £1195 – a saving of £400 on the previous week’s rental. That’s for Villa Petra, which combines 21st century facilities with traditional Cretan features such as beamed ceilings and exposed stone walls. Petra sleeps up to six in three bedrooms, with its own pool and is set on a hill with panoramic views of the sea, just 6kms away. Flights (the island is well served by charter and low-cost airlines) drop this week too – at the moment I can see fares from £221 with Eurocypria.

Looking ahead to September, there is a fair amount of availability, including a choice of character cottages, such as Velanos 4, one of four stone cottages perched just outside the village of Kefali in Crete Velanos 4 has more original features, beamed ceilings and terracotta tiles than you can shake a stick at and sleeps up to five – plus use of the shared pool with jaw-dropping views. Price for seven nights’ hire starting 8 September is £575 excluding flights.

Freelance Holidays (http://www.freelance-holidays.co.uk/, 0845 094 8871) specialises in individual villas and holiday homes for all budgets in the Mediterranean islands of Crete, Sardinia, Sicily and Mallorca.

All hand-picked, the portfolio includes simple village houses, converted farm houses and purpose built villas with pools – many with jaw-dropping views. There’s also a range of small, harbour-side apartments in Crete. Flexible start days possible on some properties.
The company has just joined ABTA, though it does not offer flight-inclusive packages, but can book car hire and make suggestions regarding the best low-cost and charter flights.
Italy (Sardinia and Sicily)

More than 20 individual properties on Sardinia including – new for 2010 – a two-bedroom apartment in Cala Gonone with a wrap-around balcony for stunning views across the harbour and out to sea: 200 metres from a white sand beach and with a choice of bars and restaurants on the doorstep. From £495 rising to £995 for a week in high season.

Sicily is the most recent addition to the portfolio with a selection of 15 holiday homes for 2010 including Villa Materano, with outstanding sea views over the beach at Scopello in the north-west of the island. Pink Oleander lines the driveway, and a small garden overlooks the sea, as does the shaded terrace for al-fresco dining and barbecues. Inside, the updated accommodation is mostly open-plan with cool tiled floors and a pretty blue and white kitchen. Three double bedrooms share two shower rooms. Though there is no pool the large sandy beach is just 150 metres down the hill. Medieval Scopello – beloved of writer Gavin Maxwell – is less than 2kms away, with a baker, trattorias and small shops, while the footpaths and unspoiled coast of the Zingaro Nature reserve is only 300 metres from the house. From £1200 rising to £2200 for a peak season week.

Also new are some restored merchants’ houses in Castelmare, with roof terraces and sea views
